Mako Sharks

We wrote expository essays in class. Please read mine on Mako Sharks.

Dudu, dudu, dududududududu!!!! Ahhhh! Wait a minute, that’s not Jaws it’s a Mako shark. Isn’t it such a unique animal? Why? Because their physical features, reasons for classification and aggressiveness make them one of the most beautiful and most feared sharks in the world.
Mako sharks are very marvelous creatures. The only other shark that could even compare to the beauty of the Mako would be the Blue Shark. Why are they so beautiful you ask? Well because their wet skin and fins are a purplish blue color, almost an indigo, which turns silvery on the sides and fades to a white stomach. They aren’t as big as Great Whites because they only weigh 1,000 pounds and average up to 7-8 feet but can grow up to be 12 feet! What they lack in size though they make up for in speed. Makos are the fastest of all sharks because they have the ability to swim up to 60 mph, but they prefer to swim about 35mph. That and the fact that they are very territorial make them one of the dangerous, if not the most dangerous, according to the National Geographic channel website. Their fins and gills, two of their most important physical features, give them the ability to live underwater, also causing them to be classified as a fish.
Out of all the different animal kingdoms, a Mako Shark is a fish for many reasons. One, because it lives in open waters 500 meters deep where they swim alone. Another reason these cold blooded creatures are fish is because to breathe, they have to keep moving forward so the sea water passes through their gills allowing them to breathe. That is why sharks are always found swimming. One of their traits is a little misleading though. The trait is that the mothers give birth to the babies, also called pups, which are born alive instead of in eggs. Surprisingly though, after the mother gives birth to them, she leaves them by themselves to eat each other. That’s one of the reasons not as many survive. Another reason why they don’t survive is because their amazing speed makes them wanted by fisherman. Having a Mako’s head isn’t an easy task. It takes a lot of skill and patients and can sometime lead to tragedy.
Mako sharks have caused havoc plenty of times around the world. Some fatal attacks and some that weren’t killer, just causing injuries. These attacks aren’t because they are vicious or murderous, it’s because Mako’s are very territorial creatures. Mako mishaps don’t always go in the sharks favor though. According to George Probst, the writer for The Dorsal Fin, on March 30, 2011, a group of men were in a boat 50 miles off shore when an eight foot, three hundred plus pound Mako jumped into their boat. Luckily, none of the men were injured and after four hours of waiting the Mako finally died from being out of water so long. The reason for the shark to jump into the boat is believed to be that the Mako thought it was a huge fish and was trying to scare it away when he ended on the floor of the ship. This story shows very well how territorial these creatures are.
Mako sharks are one of the most beautiful marvelous creatures in the world. This is because of their extra ordinary physical features, ways to be classified as a fish, and aggressiveness. I hope that you now share the dream with me of Mako sharks being able to find a way to outsmart fisherman without harming humans or themselves.
